We had business
in the Cordel, GA area so we decided to try out Georgia Veterans State
Park.
The park lies
next to 8,600-acre Lake Blackshear and was established as a memorial to U.S.
veterans. The park has a museum with aircraft, armored vehicles,
uniforms, weapons, medals and other items from the Revolutionary War through
the Gulf War.
The campground is
set up in three "camping areas. Camping area #1 and #2 are next to
each other and have premium sites situated lakeside.
Camping area #3 is across the street in a pine grove. A comfort station
serves each camping area. The photo to the right is taken through the center
of camping area #3 and shows how large the sites are.
While
reservations are taken, it is a first come first served campground. Once
you arrive, you pick your site from available sites of your type.
We chose camping
area #3 as it has much larger sites. While larger, there is little
understory in any area of the campground to shield you from your
neighbors. If you don't like that closed in feeling, chose area
#3. Another nice thing in camping area #3 is that all site4s are pull
through. All sites, not just the premium ones have water, electric and
cable. Additionally, each site has a fire ring, grill and lantern
pole. A dump station is situated just down the road from all camping
areas.
In addition to
the "educational" aspects of the park, an 18 hole golf
course, a swimming beach, radio controlled airfield, boat ramp, fishing piers,
disk golf and hiking are available. If you bring your boat and have a
[premium site you can pull right up behind you camper.
Handicapped Availability
The comfort
stations were noted to have roll in showers, but camping area #3 is entirely gravel
roads,
